NOV. NEWSLETTER: FEATURE: New SOURCE Space Student Resources

The SOURCE is continuing to update its student resources available in the new SOURCE space in the Ferguson Center, with exciting new updates for November!

This month’s updates include: a new copier policy, new lockers for student organizations, and the arrival of laptops and iPads available for 24-hour renting.

The new copying policy mandates that each student organization can apply to have 400 copies/year for $20 dollars out of FAC accounts (Financial Affairs Committee). Visit sga.ua.edu for information on FAC accounts.

To sign up for a copy code for use in the SOURCE space, go to SOURCE under the Campus Life tab in myBama, login under the student organization, and click forms > student organization copies. Once the online form is completed, the organization’s president is emailed a code for that organization’s use. Organizations can use the copier in the SOURCE space anytime the Ferguson Center is open. Copies are black and white only, but colored paper is available.

Thirty lockers on the third floor of the Ferguson Center are also now available for student organizations. Organizations can enter into a random drawing to receive a locker for by again visiting myBama, clicking the Campus Life tab, logging in under the student organization, and clicking forms > source lockers.

Organizations must enter the drawing by Dec. 1st, and are not guaranteed a locker just by entering. The locker will be the organization’s for a two-year period and must be updated or the organization will lose it.

Finally, laptops and iPads have finally arrived in the SOURCE space! Both Dell and Mac laptops and iPads are available for 24-hour rental. Students must sign a rental agreement stating that they are responsible for the equipment and its return. (Full information on the rental agreement is available in the SOURCE space).

Laptops can be rented at the SOURCE space during SOURCE office hours, which are from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Laptops MUST be returned by end 24 hour period, or student is subject to late fees. Students may also make reservations in advance, but arriving 15 minutes after reservation time results in forfeit of reservation. SOURCE must be contacted one hour prior to reservation.

We look forward to seeing students use these exciting new resources! For more information, contact the SOURCE at source@bama.ua.edu or come by the SOURCE space.

Oct. Newsletter: FEATURE: The Crimson White Community Engagement Team

Last spring, the Crimson White created its Community Engagement team to better connect students with the paper.  This six-member team strives to create and foster campus relationships with the newspaper, in addition to managing its social media.

Crimson White Editor Victor Luckerson hopes that the team fills a vital role for the newspaper.

“We truly want to be a student newspaper, and I would like the Community Engagement team to act as a bridge between the students and the paper itself,” he said. “The team was created because the Crimson White needs an open and beneficial dialogue with campus.”

With regards to student organizations, the Community Engagement team plans to facilitate their connection with the newspaper.  Community Manager Marion Steinberg wants the two-way street to be as valuable as possible.

“Student organizations are a major part of campus and deserve coverage and publicity,” she said.  “The Community Engagement team will try to effectively communicate with groups to streamline that process.”

Already this semester, the team has utilized social media to facilitate discussions with students and members of the community.

The following documents give more information on how to contact the Crimson White, FAQ and information about press releases:

Oct. Newsletter: FEATURE: Beat Auburn Beat Hunger

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Fight began in 1994. The Food Fight, sponsored by The University of Alabama Community Service Center and the West Alabama Food  Bank, is a six week long competition against Auburn University. Both universities compete to collect the most non-perishable food items and monetary donations ($1 = 2 lbs.) Last year, BABH at The University of Alabama beat Auburn and raised 175,653 lbs. of food to Auburn’s 164,034 lbs.

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger kick-off was Monday, Oct. 11, and the competition will run until Nov. 22.  University of Alabama student organizations, faculty, staff and the Tuscaloosa community participate in BABH. There are several categories for student organizations, groups, and the Tuscaloosa community to participate in. The groups that win each category receive a plaque of recognition and are recognized at an Alabama basketball game.

BABH can donations can be put in the large white truck parked in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Be sure to label your cans with your full student organization or group’s name. You can write the name with a marker on each individual can or put all your cans in a closed box with the group name on the outside of the box. Please do not use sticky notes or plastic bags, and write full names of Greek organizations, not just the letters.

Collection barrels are also placed at locations both on-campus and around Tuscaloosa. Monetary donations are also accepted at Bama Dining locations and online at beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu. A $10 donation can also be made by texting "BAMA" to 27722 and replying “yes.”

Oct. Newsletter: Campus Voices

Campus Voices (formerly known as Campus Voice) will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom.

Campus Voices is a program created by The SOURCE Board of Governors in order to give student organizations a voice about policies and procedures that affect them and a chance to collaborate together.  Each organization is allowed to bring three representatives to the forum.

Our hope is that this forum will allow student organizations to know each other better and encourage collaboration among groups, while at the same time giving you the opportunity to express your opinions or concerns regarding the use of the SOURCE.

Campus Voices will consist of two parts.  The first will feature round table discussions with representatives from five or six other student organizations, and the second will take the form of an open forum with SOURCE leaders. The small table discussions will allow you to get to know more about other groups and the activities in which they partake on campus.  The open forum will give you a chance to shape the way The SOURCE operates and to inform us how we can serve you best.

Last year, 92% of attendees stated they had a good or excellent overall experience at the forum—a number we aim to improve this year! Please e-mail Michael Forst, SOURCE Board of Governors Director of Outreach, at sourceoutreach@bama.ua.edu with any questions or to accept your invitation and how many representatives you will have attending on your behalf.

Newsletter: Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

The UA ACFE is committed to providing a comprehensive experience for all students to learn about the global threat of fraud and to help them prepare for careers in the anti-fraud profession. Student Associate membership is open to undergraduate students in any major enrolled in 9 semester hours, or graduate students enrolled in 6 semester hours. The Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential denotes proven expertise in fraud prevention, detection and deterrence. As a chapter we plan to have an informative and creative learning environment and we will encourage each member to sit for the CFE exam upon graduation.

CFEs are trained to identify the warning signs and red flags that indicate evidence of fraud and fraud risk. CFEs around the world help protect the global economy by uncovering fraud and implementing processes to prevent fraud from occurring in the first place. CFEs often work in such diverse fields as insurance, health care, manufacturing, banking&finance, construction as well as governmental agencies (IRS, FBI and CIA).

Professionals from different areas of Industry and Commerce will visit our chapter throughout the year and speak to our group and provide insight into their fields of expertise. We continue to have excellent support from the Accounting department and our Faculty Advisers which enable us to provide a positive and informative experience.

At our initial meeting we had 40+ students arrive and participate from various majors including criminal justice, pre-law, accounting and finance. Our meeting times and presenters will be announced and a detailed schedule provided at our first presentation. If you are interested in joining or coming to the first presentation please contact us at thesource@ua.edu.
