NOV. NEWSLETTER: Bama Buddies Update

Bama Buddies is a service initiative from the SOURCE that provides an opportunity for student organizations to participate in meaningful service in a fun and creative way that requires barely any logistical coordination on your part. Individuals who participate in Bama Buddies purchase a stuffed animal body (we have new and exciting types this year!), stuff it, and then have the option to either donate it for the program or keep it.

Bama Buddies November 2010 Update:

Bama Buddies will be accepting orders as late as the week of Thanksgiving. Next semester, they will be partnering with the Community Service Center to offer service projects to benefit the four charities that Bama Buddies supports.

Email projects.thesource@gmail.com with questions or more information!

NOV. NEWSLETTER: FEATURE: New SOURCE Space Student Resources

The SOURCE is continuing to update its student resources available in the new SOURCE space in the Ferguson Center, with exciting new updates for November!

This month’s updates include: a new copier policy, new lockers for student organizations, and the arrival of laptops and iPads available for 24-hour renting.

The new copying policy mandates that each student organization can apply to have 400 copies/year for $20 dollars out of FAC accounts (Financial Affairs Committee). Visit sga.ua.edu for information on FAC accounts.

To sign up for a copy code for use in the SOURCE space, go to SOURCE under the Campus Life tab in myBama, login under the student organization, and click forms > student organization copies. Once the online form is completed, the organization’s president is emailed a code for that organization’s use. Organizations can use the copier in the SOURCE space anytime the Ferguson Center is open. Copies are black and white only, but colored paper is available.

Thirty lockers on the third floor of the Ferguson Center are also now available for student organizations. Organizations can enter into a random drawing to receive a locker for by again visiting myBama, clicking the Campus Life tab, logging in under the student organization, and clicking forms > source lockers.

Organizations must enter the drawing by Dec. 1st, and are not guaranteed a locker just by entering. The locker will be the organization’s for a two-year period and must be updated or the organization will lose it.

Finally, laptops and iPads have finally arrived in the SOURCE space! Both Dell and Mac laptops and iPads are available for 24-hour rental. Students must sign a rental agreement stating that they are responsible for the equipment and its return. (Full information on the rental agreement is available in the SOURCE space).

Laptops can be rented at the SOURCE space during SOURCE office hours, which are from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Laptops MUST be returned by end 24 hour period, or student is subject to late fees. Students may also make reservations in advance, but arriving 15 minutes after reservation time results in forfeit of reservation. SOURCE must be contacted one hour prior to reservation.

We look forward to seeing students use these exciting new resources! For more information, contact the SOURCE at source@bama.ua.edu or come by the SOURCE space.

NOV. NEWSLETTER: AL'S PALS

An exciting new volunteer/mentorship opportunity is now available for University of Alabama Students!

The Ferguson Center, along with Community Service Center as well as Student Involvement and Leadership, announced the launch of “Al’s Pals,” a mentorship program that pairs volunteers with a second or third grade student at the new McKenzie Court Community Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mentors will work one-on-one with the elementary students, developing a fun and friendly relationship while helping children with their homework, reinforcing reading and math skills and partaking in enrichment and recreational activities.

“We are so excited about bringing Al’s Pals to McKenzie Court,” says Besty Ervin, McKenzie Court site manager. “This program will allow students to meet people from all walks of life who can give them the confidence they need to realize that they too can go to college and be successful in the future.”

Applications are available through this newsletter via Google Docs. (See below). Applications should be returned when signing up for an interview in Ferguson 356.

New mentor interviews will be held during the week of Nov. 15 and orientation sessions will be held Jan. 12 and 13 at the Ferguson Center. All students at The University of Alabama are invited to apply. While interviews are currently in session, those interested may still contact Al’s Pals for opportunities to be involved.

Mentoring will begin at the McKenzie Court Community Center on Jan. 19 and 20. Mentor meetings will be held every Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the semester. Mentors can choose which day they would like to meet with their mentee.

The Al’s Pals program will help organize transportation to McKenzie Court for mentors if needed and will provide training and support for all Al’s Pals mentors.

For more information or to request an Al’s Pals application, call 205-965-4303 or email alspalsua@gmail.com. (please contact asap if still interested in applying or volunteering)
