MARCH NEWSLETTER: Dance For Freedom in Creation! [letter from Caitlin Trotter]

You Don't Want to Miss This: Art Therapy, Clean Water, and a Dance Party

Hello Presidents and Advisors!

Apwonjo is a UA student organization that raises awareness about issues of social justice in Sub-Saharan Africa.  In the past few years we have hosted many successful panel discussions, films, fundraisers, and events with organizations such as Invisible Children, Freedom in Creation, and Save Darfur, and have worked with several campaigns including Break the Silence about the conflict in the Congo and Peace One Day.

This semester our fundraising efforts are focused on Freedom in Creation, an organization that provides education and art therapy to former child soldiers in Uganda.  FIC exhibits the artwork of these children internationally for cross cultural educational programs and for fundraising efforts.  The funds raised from the artwork are used to provide fresh, clean water sources in the children's communities by either rehabilitating wells or building new wells.

We want to be a part of bringing clean water to communities in Gulu, Uganda. What better way to mobilize the UA community in this effort than hosting a giant dance party? Apwonjo is doing just that. Join us on April 16th as we dance for Freedom in Creation! The night will start off at 8 pm with Andrew Briggs, the Founder and President of Freedom in Creation speaking.  The dance party will start following Andrew's speech and will last until 1 am. The night will be complete with a DJ, dance competitions, concessions, and games! All proceeds from the dance-a-thon will benefit Freedom in Creation.

Registration starts March 7th and prices are $10/person for a team (3 -7 people) or $12/individual.  After April 7th the prices are $15/person for a team or $20/individual.  Free water bottles will be given away at registration, and t-shirts will be available to order!

Register online, at every Apwonjo event between March 7th and April 16th, and at our tables in the Ferg.  Please visit our facebook event and website for more information about registering.

We encourage student organizations to form teams and to seek possible avenues for funding to sponsor their members at this event.  Additionally, the officers and members of Apwonjo would like to come talk to your organization to encourage members to register early.  If you are interested in learning more about the dance-a-thon or in having an Apwonjo member come speak to your organization, please contact Caitlin Trottter at apwonjo@gmail.com.

Help us bring clean water to Gulu, Uganda.  Join us on April 16th as we dance for Freedom in Creation!

For Peace and Clean Water,

Caitlin Trotter
Director of Public Relations

MARCH NEWSLETTER: UA TOMS

UA TOMS is a new organization on campus that aims to promote the One for One movement. For every pair of TOMS shoes purchased, a pair will be given to someone in need.

UA TOMS will host the One Day Without Shoes event on the Quad on April 5. While the details are still in the works, the idea is to have two barefoot walks around the Quad (and anyone will be welcome to join in) with some additional festivities all afternoon.

UA TOMS wants this event to unite all students on campus and invite all of the campus organizations to participate, as volunteers, partners or participants. They will need volunteers on hand to pass out water, run errands and just be present--they are looking into setting up and SLPro project for students interested in volunteering.

Any organization interested taking a spin off of the ODWS idea and setting up a table or activity is welcome. If your organization is interested in being a part of our One Day Without Shoes event, please email Kellie Gentry or Maryalice Lazarus at uatoms@gmail.com.

MARCH NEWSLETTER: Student Organization Awards Banquet

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership and the SOUCE Board of Governors have prepare the application packet for the 2010-11 Student Organization Awards.

Student organizations are vital in shaping and developing the ever growing university of Alabama community.  Students come together through student organizations to share common goals and interests and develop unique ways to accomplish and celebrate them. Each organization is distinct and important, and it is important that the successes of student organizations are shared with the University community.  This packet and its accompanying awards are designed as ways for organizations to self-evaluate and record their accomplishments.

The award packets will be reviewed by a selections board, and the SOUCE Student Organizations Awards Banquet will take place April 13th to recognize those students, organizations and advisers that the board deems excellent. Organizations that apply will be recognized by being placed in one of four categories (good standing, bronze star, silver star or crimson star).  Individual awards will additionally be given for outstanding students, advisers and projects.

Help recognize the great organizations, students and advisers of the University by completing the awards packet and returning it to the SOURCE office in 355 Ferguson Center by March 28th at 4:45 pm.

If you have any questions, please stop by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, email sourceoutreach@bama.ua.edu or call 348-6114.

Thank you for all of your hard work, and good luck!

MARCH NEWSLETTER: Fashion, Inc. T-Shirt Drive

Now through April 19 students can donate t-shirts for the Tee Time fashion show hosted by Fashion, Inc.
This annual fashion show aims at giving designers an opportunity to create a new piece from a t-shirt, and then have their work modeled on the runway. This year, the program also coincides with Green Week, and has a goal of being environmentally friendly and using donated t-shirts.

Fashion, Inc. asks that organizations collect their leftover club t-shirts to be donated for the show, which will be held April 19 on the lawn of Doster. Each organization that donates t-shirts will be recognized at the show. Also, based on the number of shirts donated, the organization may win free tickets to the show.

Any t-shirts remaining after the show will be donated to charity or used to make other items to be donated. Items featured in the show will be available for purchase as well.

For more information, please contact Theresa Mince, Public Relations Chair for Fashion, Inc. at tgmince@crimson.ua.edu.
