The SOURCE monthly newsletter will now feature a special section entitled "SGA News." This portion of the newsletter will include items that SGA wishes to inform student organizations about, including "Upcoming Events" and "Initiatives." This month’s section features information about Ride With the Tide, Voter Registration, Bama Laundry as well as other information.

October 18-22nd – Academic Integrity Week

October 18th - Women’s Political Initiative

Last Women's Political Initiative speaker: AL State Senator Vivian Figures, Monday, October 18, 7pm Ferguson Ballroom: "Senator Figures now serves as Chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee, Mobile Senate Local Delegation and the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee for License Plates. As Senator, she played a major role in helping to author legislation for school personnel background checks for both public and private schools to make children safer. Because of her sponsorship and passage of the Alabama Clean Indoor Act, she was awarded the National Tobacco Award from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and the Outstanding Advocate Award from the American Heart Association. Senator Figures continues to work for a Smoke-Free Alabama." 

October 19th – Landlord, Leases, and Legalities

The SGA and Off-Campus Housing will be hosting an information session on what students need to know about living off-campus. The event is known as Landlord, Leases, and Legalities, and is comprised of several speakers with expertise in real-estate, law, home inspections, safety, and other critical areas of knowledge needed for choosing the right place to live off-campus. The event will be held in the Ferguson Theater at 7:00pm.

October 19th – Gubernatorial Debate Viewing Party

Gubernatorial Debate Viewing party, Tuesday, October 19, 6:40-8:15pm, Ferguson East Dining Hall. Dr. Robert Bentley (GOP) and Commissioner Ron Sparks (Dem) participate in the second premier Gubernatorial Debate hosted at Auburn University. Come enjoy free food, debate viewing, and debate analysis and discussion.

Ride with the Tide

Through a partnership with the Parents’ Association, the Student Government Association is excited to offer you bus transportation to and from the Alabama vs. LSU football game on November 6.  Over 300 Alabama students to travel, tailgate, and enjoy a meal together!

Student tickets for “Ride with the Tide” will cost $45 and will cover an entire day of activities. Charter buses will leave Tuscaloosa the day of the game and drop students at an SGA-sponsored tailgate in Baton Rouge that will include free food and televisions to watch all the games. Buses will travel back to Tuscaloosa following the game. This program is ideal for students who want a safe, easy way to get and from the game without worrying about hotels and driving – whether or not a football ticket has been purchased.

Students may purchase Ride with the Tide tickets individually or in groups. Groups may also purchase blocks of seating for members. You may request to be seated on the same bus with other students who have already purchased tickets. Encourage Voter Registration! Forms and registration guidelines can be found in the front of the SGA Office. Completed registration forms will be submitted to the Board of Registrars by an SGA representative

RAVE Guardian

Use the Guardian Timer whenever you're out alone, in an unfamiliar area or would like UAPD to check on you if you cannot deactivate your timer. Oct. Newsletter: FEATURE: The Crimson White Community Engagement Team

Last spring, the Crimson White created its Community Engagement team to better connect students with the paper.  This six-member team strives to create and foster campus relationships with the newspaper, in addition to managing its social media.

Crimson White Editor Victor Luckerson hopes that the team fills a vital role for the newspaper.

“We truly want to be a student newspaper, and I would like the Community Engagement team to act as a bridge between the students and the paper itself,” he said. “The team was created because the Crimson White needs an open and beneficial dialogue with campus.”

           

With regards to student organizations, the Community Engagement team plans to facilitate their connection with the newspaper.  Community Manager Marion Steinberg wants the two-way street to be as valuable as possible.

           

“Student organizations are a major part of campus and deserve coverage and publicity,” she said.  “The Community Engagement team will try to effectively communicate with groups to streamline that process.”

Already this semester, the team has utilized social media to facilitate discussions with students and members of the community.

Oct. Newsletter: FEATURE: Beat Auburn Beat Hunger

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Fight began in 1994. The Food Fight, sponsored by The University of Alabama Community Service Center and the West Alabama Food  Bank, is a six week long competition against Auburn University. Both universities compete to collect the most non-perishable food items and monetary donations ($1 = 2 lbs.) Last year, BABH at The University of Alabama beat Auburn and raised 175,653 lbs. of food to Auburn’s 164,034 lbs.

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger kick-off was Monday, Oct. 11, and the competition will run until Nov. 22.  University of Alabama student organizations, faculty, staff and the Tuscaloosa community participate in BABH. There are several categories for student organizations, groups, and the Tuscaloosa community to participate in. The groups that win each category receive a plaque of recognition and are recognized at an Alabama basketball game.

BABH can donations can be put in the large white truck parked in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Be sure to label your cans with your full student organization or group’s name. You can write the name with a marker on each individual can or put all your cans in a closed box with the group name on the outside of the box. Please do not use sticky notes or plastic bags, and write full names of Greek organizations, not just the letters.

Collection barrels are also placed at locations both on-campus and around Tuscaloosa. Monetary donations are also accepted at Bama Dining locations and online at beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu. A $10 donation can also be made by texting "BAMA" to 27722 and replying “yes.”

•            Residence Halls: Burke, Tutwiler, Riverside, Rose Towers, Ridgecrest, Friedman, Somerville, Lakeside, Blount, Harris, Paty, and Bryant Hall

•            Academic Buildings: Morgan Hall, Gorgas Library, Alston, Bruno Library, Bidgood, ten Hoor, Moody Music Building

•            Dining Locations: Lakeside Dining, Burke Dining, Ferguson Food Court, Fresh Food Co., Julia’s Market, and Stewart’s Corner

•            Student Recreation Center •            Ferguson Center and Ferguson Center Plaza (there is a big, white truck open for

donations)

Oct. Newsletter: ReSOURCE Fair Success

The ReSOURCE fair was a huge success, which around 100 organizations in attendance. Organizations made connections with various university departments and local businesses and learned ways that they can make their great organizations even better.
 
The SOURCE would like to thank all of the vendors and organizations present at the ReSOURCE fair. If you are still looking for resources or help with your organization, stop by the SOURCE space in the Ferguson center!

Oct. Newsletter: Campus Voices

Campus Voices (formerly known as Campus Voice) will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom.

Campus Voices is a program created by The SOURCE Board of Governors in order to give student organizations a voice about policies and procedures that affect them and a chance to collaborate together.  Each organization is allowed to bring three representatives to the forum.

Our hope is that this forum will allow student organizations to know each other better and encourage collaboration among groups, while at the same time giving you the opportunity to express your opinions or concerns regarding the use of the SOURCE. 

Campus Voices will consist of two parts.  The first will feature round table discussions with representatives from five or six other student organizations, and the second will take the form of an open forum with SOURCE leaders. The small table discussions will allow you to get to know more about other groups and the activities in which they partake on campus.  The open forum will give you a chance to shape the way The SOURCE operates and to inform us how we can serve you best.

Last year, 92% of attendees stated they had a good or excellent overall experience at the forum—a number we aim to improve this year! Oct. Newsletter: The Kentuck Festival of the Arts 2010

This year’s Kentuck Festival of the Arts will be held the weekend of October 16 and 17 at Kentuck Park in Northport. The festival is a unique opportunity for University of Alabama students to learn more about the arts and see a variety of artistic styles from the 250+ artists participating this year.

On Sunday, Oct. 17 there will be a free bus shuttle to and from the Ferg for students wishing to attend the festival. Shuttle pick up will be by the flagpole on the Ferg Plaza. A $10 day pass and more information about the festival is available at the Kentuck Festival of the Arts website. The first 30 students who email uaprograms@gmail.com before Friday, Oct. 15 will receive a free Sunday day pass for the festival.
