Ride with the Tide
Through a partnership with the Parents’ Association, the Student Government Association is excited to offer you bus transportation to and from the Alabama vs. LSU football game on November 6.  Over 300 Alabama students to travel, tailgate, and enjoy a meal together!

Student tickets for “Ride with the Tide” will cost $45 and will cover an entire day of activities. Charter buses will leave Tuscaloosa the day of the game and drop students at an SGA-sponsored tailgate in Baton Rouge that will include free food and televisions to watch all the games. Buses will travel back to Tuscaloosa following the game. This program is ideal for students who want a safe, easy way to get and from the game without worrying about hotels and driving – whether or not a football ticket has been purchased.

Students may purchase Ride with the Tide tickets individually or in groups. Groups may also purchase blocks of seating for members. You may request to be seated on the same bus with other students who have already purchased tickets. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit sga.ua.edu or contact the SGA office at (205)-348-2742 or 231 Ferguson. It’s time to ride with the Tide in a completely new way!

Oct. Newsletter: FEATURE: The Crimson White Community Engagement Team

Last spring, the Crimson White created its Community Engagement team to better connect students with the paper.  This six-member team strives to create and foster campus relationships with the newspaper, in addition to managing its social media.

Crimson White Editor Victor Luckerson hopes that the team fills a vital role for the newspaper.

“We truly want to be a student newspaper, and I would like the Community Engagement team to act as a bridge between the students and the paper itself,” he said. “The team was created because the Crimson White needs an open and beneficial dialogue with campus.”

With regards to student organizations, the Community Engagement team plans to facilitate their connection with the newspaper.  Community Manager Marion Steinberg wants the two-way street to be as valuable as possible.

“Student organizations are a major part of campus and deserve coverage and publicity,” she said.  “The Community Engagement team will try to effectively communicate with groups to streamline that process.”

Already this semester, the team has utilized social media to facilitate discussions with students and members of the community.

The following documents give more information on how to contact the Crimson White, FAQ and information about press releases:

Oct. Newsletter: FEATURE: Beat Auburn Beat Hunger

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Fight began in 1994. The Food Fight, sponsored by The University of Alabama Community Service Center and the West Alabama Food  Bank, is a six week long competition against Auburn University. Both universities compete to collect the most non-perishable food items and monetary donations ($1 = 2 lbs.) Last year, BABH at The University of Alabama beat Auburn and raised 175,653 lbs. of food to Auburn’s 164,034 lbs.

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger kick-off was Monday, Oct. 11, and the competition will run until Nov. 22.  University of Alabama student organizations, faculty, staff and the Tuscaloosa community participate in BABH. There are several categories for student organizations, groups, and the Tuscaloosa community to participate in. The groups that win each category receive a plaque of recognition and are recognized at an Alabama basketball game.

BABH can donations can be put in the large white truck parked in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Be sure to label your cans with your full student organization or group’s name. You can write the name with a marker on each individual can or put all your cans in a closed box with the group name on the outside of the box. Please do not use sticky notes or plastic bags, and write full names of Greek organizations, not just the letters.

Collection barrels are also placed at locations both on-campus and around Tuscaloosa. Monetary donations are also accepted at Bama Dining locations and online at beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu. A $10 donation can also be made by texting "BAMA" to 27722 and replying “yes.”

Collection sites are located at:
Residence Halls: Burke, Tutwiler, Riverside, Rose Towers, Ridgecrest, Friedman, Somerville, Lakeside, Blount, Harris, Paty, and Bryant Hall

The ReSOURCE fair was a huge success, which around 100 organizations in attendance. Organizations made connections with various university departments and local businesses and learned ways that they can make their great organizations even better.

Oct. Newsletter: Campus Voices

Campus Voices (formerly known as Campus Voice) will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom.

Campus Voices is a program created by The SOURCE Board of Governors in order to give student organizations a voice about policies and procedures that affect them and a chance to collaborate together.  Each organization is allowed to bring three representatives to the forum.

Our hope is that this forum will allow student organizations to know each other better and encourage collaboration among groups, while at the same time giving you the opportunity to express your opinions or concerns regarding the use of the SOURCE.

Campus Voices will consist of two parts.  The first will feature round table discussions with representatives from five or six other student organizations, and the second will take the form of an open forum with SOURCE leaders. The small table discussions will allow you to get to know more about other groups and the activities in which they partake on campus.  The open forum will give you a chance to shape the way The SOURCE operates and to inform us how we can serve you best.

Last year, 92% of attendees stated they had a good or excellent overall experience at the forum—a number we aim to improve this year! Please e-mail Michael Forst, SOURCE Board of Governors Director of Outreach, at sourceoutreach@bama.ua.edu with any questions or to accept your invitation and how many representatives you will have attending on your behalf.

Oct. Newsletter: Using RAs to Get Organization Information to Students

Student organizations can use Resident Advisors in the dorms as a resource to reach students. RHA Advisor Jennifer Glenn sends a weekly email entitled “What’s Up Wednesdays” to RAs that lists events/programs happening around campus. Students organizations can send her a PDF file of their event flyer to jlglenn1@sa.ua.edu and she will include it in the weekly email.

University-sponsored and University-affiliated groups may also submit materials directly to Jennifer Glenn in the Housing and Residential Communities office in Burke Hall. Groups and individuals are not permitted to post materials directly to residence hall bulletin boards. Materials from nonaffiliated groups are not posted in the residence halls.

NOTE: Common area bulletin boards in the lobby of each residence hall and designated bulletin boards managed by the Resident Advisors are provided to accommodate the distribution of printed materials to allow students living in the residential communities to be informed concerning campus activities and events. Distribution guidelines have been established to respect the privacy of residents living in campus housing and also provide efficient and effective use of time spent by Resident Advisors responsible for developing community and serving as university resources. The following are guidelines for the distribution of any printed materials from University-sponsored groups, University-affiliated groups, and nonaffiliated groups:

*Flyers and other materials for posting will not be permitted for distribution from Community Offices unless an exception is made by the Executive Director of Housing and Residential Communities or designee.
*HRC requires at least two business days for materials to be posted.
*Flyers must be dated and should include contact information including name and telephone number of the individual or sponsoring organization. Flyers that are not approved or dated will be removed.
*Flyers may be provided for each hall or for each Resident Advisor (RA). A maximum of 45 copies are necessary to post one flyer in each residence hall. A maximum of 220 copies are necessary to provide one flyer for each Resident Advisor. Flyers per RA must be divided up in stacks of 10. Flyers will be posted for a maximum of 14 days.
*Announcements (meetings, birthdays, etc.) using any media (chalk, paint, etc.) on residence hall property are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to walls and sidewalks. Individuals will be charged accordingly for any damages/clean-up costs incurred as a result of improper posting.
*Materials for distribution should be no larger than 11" x 17" in size. Materials larger than this will be posted only as space permits.
*At no time are materials to be posted on residence hall doors or walls or on the entrance doors unless the materials are designated as an Emergency or Urgent Information Notice.

Student organizations should submit any program/event advertisements to Jennifer Glenn in the Housing and Residential Communities office in Burke Hall, as Housing and Residential Communities staff are the only ones authorized to post materials in the residence halls.

Oct. Newsletter: Bama Buddies 2010

Bama Buddies is a service initiative from the SOURCE that provides an opportunity for student organizations to participate in meaningful service in a fun and creative way that requires barely any logistical coordination on your part.

Individuals who participate in Bama Buddies purchase a stuffed animal body (we have new and exciting types this year!), stuff it, and then have the option to either donate it for the program or keep it.

Bama Buddies’ three goals are:
• Produce Christmas presents for local children in need and raise funds for the community groups that serve them
• Raise awareness about those charities and provide opportunities for more service projects in the future
• Create means of collaboration among diverse student groups, contributing to building a sense of community across campus

Bama Buddies will be taking orders from October 4-November 5 (if you are a student organization interested in doing Bama Buddies with a group please email projects.thesource@gmail.com for more ordering information) and will have table set up in the Ferguson Center November 8-17. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with Bama Buddies this year! The order form is also on the SOURCE website.

Please check the Bama Buddies facebook page for more updates throughout the semester, or email Richard Cockrum at sourceleadership@bama.ua.edu for more information.
