MARCH NEWSLETTER: Dance For Freedom in Creation! [letter from Caitlin Trotter]

You Don't Want to Miss This: Art Therapy, Clean Water, and a Dance Party

Hello Presidents and Advisors!

Apwonjo is a UA student organization that raises awareness about issues of social justice in Sub-Saharan Africa.  In the past few years we have hosted many successful panel discussions, films, fundraisers, and events with organizations such as Invisible Children, Freedom in Creation, and Save Darfur, and have worked with several campaigns including Break the Silence about the conflict in the Congo and Peace One Day.

This semester our fundraising efforts are focused on Freedom in Creation, an organization that provides education and art therapy to former child soldiers in Uganda.  FIC exhibits the artwork of these children internationally for cross cultural educational programs and for fundraising efforts.  The funds raised from the artwork are used to provide fresh, clean water sources in the children's communities by either rehabilitating wells or building new wells.

We want to be a part of bringing clean water to communities in Gulu, Uganda. What better way to mobilize the UA community in this effort than hosting a giant dance party? Apwonjo is doing just that. Join us on April 16th as we dance for Freedom in Creation! The night will start off at 8 pm with Andrew Briggs, the Founder and President of Freedom in Creation speaking.  The dance party will start following Andrew's speech and will last until 1 am. The night will be complete with a DJ, dance competitions, concessions, and games! All proceeds from the dance-a-thon will benefit Freedom in Creation.

Registration starts March 7th and prices are $10/person for a team (3 -7 people) or $12/individual.  After April 7th the prices are $15/person for a team or $20/individual.  Free water bottles will be given away at registration, and t-shirts will be available to order!

Register online, at every Apwonjo event between March 7th and April 16th, and at our tables in the Ferg.  Please visit our facebook event and website for more information about registering.

We encourage student organizations to form teams and to seek possible avenues for funding to sponsor their members at this event.  Additionally, the officers and members of Apwonjo would like to come talk to your organization to encourage members to register early.  If you are interested in learning more about the dance-a-thon or in having an Apwonjo member come speak to your organization, please contact Caitlin Trottter at apwonjo@gmail.com.

Help us bring clean water to Gulu, Uganda.  Join us on April 16th as we dance for Freedom in Creation!
